PRESS RELEASE
Holy Cross, WooSox set to host 2nd annual EBW Classic vs. Bucknell on Oct. 8
After hosting a sellout crowd in the first-ever football game played at Polar Park in 2021, Holy Cross and the Worcester Red Sox will team up again during the 2022 season to transform the ballpark into a gridiron for the EBW Classic.
The Crusaders will take on the Bucknell University Bison in a pivotal Patriot League matchup on Oct. 8 with a 4 p.m. kickoff at Polar Park in Worcester’s Canal District.
A ticket to the Polar Park contest will be included in every full Holy Cross season ticket package, with season tickets going on sale beginning Saturday, April 9. The on-sale date for WooSox season ticket members and the general public will be announced at a later date.
“We are thrilled to once again partner with the Red Sox organization to expand college football’s presence in the Worcester community,” said Holy Cross Director of Athletics Kit Hughes. “This is a truly unique student-athlete experience, and we could not be more excited to welcome Bucknell to Polar Park for this year’s matchup. It is our intent for this annual game to continue drawing people to Central Massachusetts and serve as a showcase for our college, our city, and our community for years to come. I want to thank the WooSox leadership, particularly Dan Rea and Hannah Butler, for their continued partnership and vision to help make the 2022 game a reality.”
“We look forward to having Holy Cross and Bucknell play here this fall in our second EBW Classic,” said WooSox Executive Vice President and General Manager Dan Rea. “This is quickly becoming a Polar Park tradition with our friends at Holy Cross, as we live up to our original promise to make this a ballpark for all seasons and many uses.”
In the inaugural football contest played at Polar Park on Oct. 23, 2021, the Crusaders defeated Colgate by a score of 42-10 in front of a sellout crowd of 9,508 fans. Senior running back and Auburn native Peter Oliver led an impressive effort by Holy Cross, recording a touchdown and career-high 153 rushing yards.
The contest is named the EBW Classic in honor of prominent Holy Cross alum Edward Bennett Williams. The late Edward Bennett Williams was a high-profile trial attorney who owned several professional sports teams, including the Washington Football Team and the Baltimore Orioles, where he worked closely with – and was a mentor to – current WooSox Chairman & Principal Owner and Boston Red Sox Hall of Famer Larry Lucchino (who eventually became President of the Orioles in 1988).
Holy Cross has a long history of football excellence, and has won three consecutive Patriot League titles, looking to become the only team in FCS this fall and the only team in Patriot League history to win four consecutive conference titles. Last season, the Crusaders finished with a 10-3 record overall and a perfect 6-0 mark in conference play. Holy Cross won its first FCS playoff game in program history with a home playoff victory over Sacred Heart, and finished the year ranked 19th in the nation by StatsPerform. The Crusaders also defeated a football bowl subdivision opponent for the first time since 2002 with a season-opening victory over Connecticut. The Crusaders return 16 All-Patriot League honorees from 2021.
Entering its 127th season in 2022, the Holy Cross football program is one of the most storied in New England, having featured such greats as Gordie Lockbaum, George Connor, and Bill Osmanski. More than 80 Crusaders have gone on to play professional football, including current Detroit Lion Kalif Raymond '16.
Season tickets for the 2022 Holy Cross football season will go on sale on Saturday, April 9. For further details on the fall classic, please email tickets@holycross.edu or call or text 1-844-GO-CROSS. Fans can also email info@woosox.com or call the WooSox at 508-500-1000.
